U.S. federal authorities arrested Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, on July 2, 2020, following a raid at a secluded property in New Hampshire, marking a major development in the long-running investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking network.

Maxwell, a British socialite and former companion of Epstein, was taken into custody by the FBI at a remote estate in Bradford, New Hampshire, where she had been living in seclusion. Prosecutors said she had spent months avoiding public attention following Epstein’s death in a New York jail in August 2019, when he was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
According to U.S. authorities, Maxwell, then 58, was arrested without incident during an early-morning operation. Federal prosecutors alleged that she had taken deliberate steps to conceal her whereabouts, including limiting contact with the outside world and living under heightened security. The property where she was arrested reportedly spanned more than 150 acres and had been purchased in cash.
At a press conference announcing the arrest, Audrey Strauss, then Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said Maxwell played a central role in Epstein’s abuse of underage girls during the mid-1990s. “As alleged, Ghislaine Maxwell was Epstein’s closest confidante and accomplice,” Strauss said. “She helped recruit, groom, and ultimately abuse minors, all while presenting herself as a trusted figure to the victims.”
Federal prosecutors charged Maxwell with multiple offenses, including conspiracy to entice minors to travel for illegal sexual activity, sex trafficking of minors, transportation of minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, and perjury related to statements she allegedly made during a prior civil deposition. Prosecutors said the alleged crimes occurred between 1994 and 1997 and involved victims as young as 14 years old.
Maxwell has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her legal team has argued that the allegations are unsupported and that she is being unfairly targeted following Epstein’s death. Epstein, who had pleaded not guilty to federal charges, was found dead in his jail cell in what authorities later ruled a suicide.
Before her arrest, Maxwell had largely disappeared from public view. Her absence fueled speculation about her whereabouts and role in the broader Epstein investigation, particularly after Epstein’s death foreclosed the possibility of a criminal trial against him. Investigators have said Maxwell remained a key figure due to her long association with Epstein and her alleged involvement in arranging encounters with victims.
Once a prominent figure in elite social circles in New York and London, Maxwell was known for her connections to influential individuals in politics, business, and royalty. Photographs of Maxwell with former U.S. presidents, senior public officials, and Britain’s Prince Andrew circulated widely after Epstein’s arrest in 2019, raising questions about the extent of Epstein’s network. Several of those individuals have denied any involvement in Epstein’s crimes.
Victims’ advocates described Maxwell’s arrest as a significant moment in the pursuit of accountability. “For survivors, this arrest represents a step toward justice after years of silence,” said one attorney representing Epstein victims. Prosecutors emphasized that the investigation into Epstein’s associates was ongoing and encouraged additional victims to come forward.
Maxwell was initially detained without bail and later held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Her case proceeded through the federal court system amid intense public scrutiny, with prosecutors framing the charges as part of a broader effort to hold accountable those who enabled Epstein’s abuse.
The arrest marked one of the most consequential actions taken by U.S. authorities following Epstein’s death and underscored renewed efforts to pursue justice for victims, even after the central figure in the case was no longer alive to stand trial.
