THE WARNING SHE SHOULD HAVE NEVER HEARD: THE SCAR THAT BROUGHT HIM BACK

Her heart slams in her chest the moment she spots the scar she’s never seen before, a thin mark that snaps open a buried memory she’s spent years trying to forget. Suddenly, she hears his voice again—the man who once whispered that his “gifts” only reveal themselves when escape is no longer possible. And the terrifying part is that his warning might be coming true right now.

For years she convinced herself that his voice—soft, controlled, spine-deep—was just a hallucination caused by trauma. That the nights she woke breathless, convinced she wasn’t alone, were tricks of a restless mind. She built an entire life on the belief that he was gone, that the nightmare had ended.

But the scar changes everything.

It sits just beneath her shoulder blade, small but impossibly precise, like the kind of incision made by someone who knew exactly what they wanted. Someone practiced. Someone patient. Someone who once called his experiments “gifts.”

Her hands shake as she traces the line, and the last conversation she had with him—if it could even be called that—rushes back in a vivid, sickening wave. Shackles. Bright lights. His voice so close it felt woven into her breath: “My work won’t matter to you now. You’ll understand only when you can’t run from it anymore.”

She ran anyway. She thought she had outrun him.

Now, she isn’t so sure.

Determined not to panic, she forces herself to search her apartment for anything out of place—windows, locks, closets—but everything appears untouched. Too untouched. As if someone cleaned their presence away. As if someone wanted her to notice only one thing: the scar.

That’s when she finds something she doesn’t remember owning—an old digital recorder, slipped beneath her mattress. Dustless. Recently moved. Recently placed.

Her fingers hover, trembling, before she presses PLAY.

Static crackles. A long silence follows. Then a low inhale.

His voice.

Not a memory. Not an echo. A recording.

“If you’re hearing this, you’ve found it. That means the first phase worked.”

Her knees nearly give out.

“Don’t look for me yet,” the voice continues, calm and clinical. “You won’t understand what I’ve done. Not until it activates.”

She fumbles to stop the recording, but the device continues as if ignoring her attempts.

“Your body remembers me. Your mind tried not to. But we’re not finished. The second scar isn’t visible… yet.”

The recorder clicks off.

Silence presses in from every side. She stands frozen, breathing shallow, her mind a storm of terror and questions.

What phase? What did he implant? What is supposed to “activate”?

And worst of all—

Where is the second scar?

One thing is clear: the past didn’t resurface.

It followed her.

And whatever he left inside her is only just beginning.
